Fraunhofer-Institut für Physikalische Messtechnik IPM

Founded in 1973 as Fraunhofer Institute for Physical Space Research IPW, the Freiburg based Fraunhofer Institute for Physical Measurement Techniques IPM develops high-tech solutions in sensor and measurement technology, coating and material technology, magnetometry, production control, object and shape detection and thermal management. The institute’s expertise can be leveraged for a variety of applications in the aerospace industry.

  •      Hydrogen: measurement and sensor technology to determine gas quality and concentration and control permeation barriers
  • Quality assurance and analysis of coatings – from research and development to
    inline inspection systems:
measuring systems for detecting layer composition, thickness and homogeneity as well as surface contamination
  • Magnetometry and quantum sensors: highly sensitive magnetic field measurements, e.g. for laser positioning in satellites; magnetic shielding materials
  • Thermal management: temperature control and cooling using Peltier technology and heatpipes, including development and realization of Peltier modules and heatpipes; thermal simulations
  • Component and material analysis – from research and development development to inline inspection systems: surface inspection, geometry measurements, material testing, deformation
    measurement, component identification, tomography etc.
  • Data analysis, visualization, and fusion (e.g. für hyperspectral analyses): using AI based strategies such as Deep Learning

As a service provider for research and development, Fraunhofer IPM is looking for partners
to collaborate in the context of publicly funded projects and also by direct funding and bilateral cooperation.
