Fraunhofer-Institut für Kurzzeitdynamik, Ernst-Mach-Institut (EMI)

The Fraunhofer Institute for High-Speed Dynamics, Ernst-Mach-Institut, EMI in Freiburg examines the physics of high-speed processes to derive solutions for industrial applications. In experiment and simulation, EMI deals with crash, impact, and shock wave phenomena. Its overall aim is to improve the safety of components and structures under dynamic loads.
For the aerospace industry, EMI examines the reliability of satellite components in terms of impact of space debris or micrometeoroids and provides advice with regard to the optimisation of satellite design. Furthermore, EMI develops camera payloads for satellites and the corresponding Earth station components as well as scientific payloads to detect impacts.
For the aviation industry, EMI analyses the behaviour of materials and structures in the case of debris, bird and hail impact, and lightning strike. It develops and optimises 3D printed metal components.
